I Was Praying To Jesus The Sweetest Poem by Liza Sud

I Was Praying To Jesus The Sweetest

I was praying to Jesus the Sweetest
to take your obsession from me,
and He did it with ease and quickness,
and my mind became light and clean.

I was washing my body at leisure,
it is beautiful, young and good.
but I don't want for it any pleasure,
cause to me - pleasure doesn't suit.

You were kissing the very stones
I was walking at Moika quay.
I was barefoot as you wanted,
Town was empty at dawn and stiff.

There were no people - only specters,
you were waving your hat to me
and you chose the right words from letters
I described as my ecstasy.

I wrote that poem THE OTHER DAY while sitting on my balcony, which is a reflective place for me. It's very solitary. No one else has ever sat there with me, I haven't conversed side by side with anyone there. It's a private place. On Saturday late afternoon as I sat there I had a book of poems from modern Iraq but I wasn't reading it. Instead I was reflecting on your recent messages/poems and my response to them. Then the poem intruded on my reverie and composed itself spontaneously. Last winter I wrote a fantasy IN RUSSIA in which I'm suddenly with your over there, so this poem is a parallel fantasy in which you are suddenly over here. These fantasy poems are my way of coping with the hard facts of reality: the poems are light, fleet, flying; the reality is unbending. But the purpose of these poems is to give you a moment of joy, of delight. They are too small and slight to solve problems. But I sincerely mean them to make you, however briefly, happy.
