If Anyone Asks Poem by Justin Tallman

If Anyone Asks

If anyone asks
say that I got lost
staring at the sun

If they ask
why?
say that I'm laying
in a bed undone

If they ask
how did this happen?
say I simply lacked
mental discipline

If they ask
is it possible
that we can save him?
Say
possibly
but I don't know
it's as predictable
as the current
of the adjacent winds

Say that I am
not worth the worry
or wonder

Please just say
I'll figure it out
and I'm doing fine

Then let the sands flow let me be unknown if I am not worth conversation or at least breaking the ice let the flame burn and the wax dry I have done my best the coin is flipped and I will probably die before heads or tails

But what if no one asks, You’re never mentioned, Do we defy our task, Transgress convention? Do we intrude your name Into conversation Like someone rude and crass With provocation; What if the room goes still With hesitation Then resumes its shrill Cavitation. It is always a mistake To fade anonymous, Maintain, partake, Be eponymous.
