In The Hood - Poem by ronald stroman

in the hood
there really is a need to worry
about the black rats
who may be the Police
or white snakes
'disguised' as
honest politicians
‘cause both
can bring any black community grief
like a two-legged walking plague
infesting a neighborhood
the dirty vermin has contol of at night
that slick slimy politicians quickly exit
after promisin' you nothin' election day
for your vote.

in the hood
'GheTTo Warfare 101'
is a class taken early and studied late
where black-on-black crime
too often brings stolen weapons
to a house party
where people are dancin'
to the music
and are not expecting to hear gunshots
just before the police sirens
summons the ambulance
to take someone to get medical attention
if not the morgue.

too many know
born and bred
in the black ghetto
what a tragic story
the hood can be
when a Mother's vision
for a son or daughter
becomes a dream 'murdered' young
that can never be given back
to a Father
with a child in a grave or jail.

too many know now
in the hood
about poor choices
and the ugliest of temptations
that injects poison into veins
and steals one's mind
with an "overdose"
of hopelessness
capable of shattering
all of one's aspirations
one sad day after another
when desperation touches dope
or takes too many drinks
'definitely' liquified 100 proof with problems.

in the hood
many black people know
about progress
‘cause it's done every ghetto day
when somebody black finishes college
starts a black business
or just stays off drugs and out of jail.

in the hood
many black people see
that one can succeed too
and need no first aid
for most of the pain
the ghetto can deliver
that somehow gets overcome
when some "blessings" do arrive
to let you know
that even in the hood
some things do go right
no matter how brown
your black-on-black is

even when God: is not "recognized" by you
as your legal guardian.

An insightful Poem about the pains, expectations, hopes, and life in the hood. A lovely poem indeed. Thanks for sharing. (Report) Reply
