together but not
hand in hand
you and i watched
between us
love die
no sudden last gasp
no impromptu asystole
it wasted by fits and spurts
until entirely drained
before our averted eyes
love ended up demised
the wake is done
with testimonials remaining
unsaid leaving us with just
capping the urn of love’s ashes
with love’s passing
after its slow dwindle and decline
you and i are left together and alone
with an amicable acquaintedness
inhabiting a new world of emptiness
