It’s Been a Long Time

Smoking a cigarette
Drinking a coffee at quarter to four
In the morning

I haven’t done this in a long time
I have been to sleep though
I woke up at three
My pillow soaking with sweat

I think I’ve taken my medication to early
I had a couple of beers earlier
Just a farewell couple.

I’ve been reflecting on Christmas
And the new year, good or bad
On the whole I’d say it’s been a good one
No regrets or indiscretions in conversation

I’d have to say that I don’t like conversation much
I hate it when a conversation is like two people badly playing chess
Pretending that you know just how to play it
Blundering towards a final goal, defeat or victory

Anyway, I hope that this year will be a good one
For my family and friends although it will still have its ups and downs
We must take the highs and lows standing up with a stiff upper lip.
