Jim Poem by Francis Duggan

Jim

For many years now he has quarrelled with his neighbour Bill
About the boundary of one field his high field by the hill
He claims Bill's grand dad stole some of their land one hundred years ago
He moved the boundary to their side or so he claim to know.

A childless man his wife deceased and he doesn't have a friend
And he is over seventy now and his life close to an end
He hates the World and all Mankind he walks his fields alone
Those fields in just a short few years that the Government will own.

Since Jane his wife died ten years back his attitude grown worse
He feels Mankind his enemy and all of Mankind he curse
But Jim never was a happy man going by what his neighbours say
He always was a grumpy sort no different from today.

One hundred acres and a house and a large bank account
And financially a well off man he has saved a huge amount
But time is catching up on Jim and time for none does wait
And soon his land and money will be taken by the State.

And though he has nieces and nephews them he has no wish to see
He too treat them like all the rest they too the enemy
And the State will own his assets as he will never make a will
And his big worry the boundary on the field beside the hill.

He took Bill to court years ago for to move the boundary back
He lost and expenses had to pay and his mood since turned more black,
He blame the law for losing out his curse still on the judge
And to his grave 'twould seem that he will take with him his grudge

He think that Mankind is against him and that he is on his own
And imaginary injustices are all that he have known,
He live the way he choose to live a loner and alone
And the chip on his shoulder to a huge chip has grown.
