I watch with childlike fascination
as the hummingbird flies into my garden.
The morning sun causes the tiny bird
to sparkle with green fire
as it visits each flower,
propelled along by wings
beating at impossible speeds.
Some feeling deep inside me,
akin to what urges us
to instinctively protect
the small and helpless,
like holding a newborn child in one's arms,
wills me to hope that this young hummer
can survive against nature's harsh reality.
