Lazy Day, Sunny Day Poem by Maria Gracie Hernandez

Lazy Day, Sunny Day

Lazy Day, Sunny Day
by Maria Gracie Hernandez

I said to the bright sun, hola.
The hot smell of chimichangas wafted in the cool spring breeze.
The grass was wet with morning dew, even into the late afternoon
and as the sun burned as it sank behind the vast blue sea.

Hector, sprawled out across the green cesped,
would call Mama, Mama, from under the canopy of tropical trees
red with fruit,
orange from sunlit sunsets,
and yellow from bananas.
Punasta, the family gato,
would dodge them as the fell.

And the birds, bright and strong,
called from their perches.
I could almost hear them saying,
Mi encanta
mi canto.
My song charms.
