Legacy Lives On, Memory Fades Poem by Idogun Esohe

Legacy Lives On, Memory Fades

Why is life like this?
Moment after moment news arises.
People who were alive minutes ago, are gone.
Did they ever think that they will be gone to the land of the beyond in the next minute?
In between this question,
I heard a whisper.
'Humans are formed form clay and are fragile as moths,
so what chance do they have?
Born after daybreak,
they die before nightfall and disappear forever.
when their tent pegs are pulled up,
they leave this life,
having gained no wisdom.'
As I pondered on this word,
I began to shed tears.
I asked myself “why is death so cruel? '
the cold hands of death has snatched the warm breath of many,
and left loved ones in pain.

Life is like a roller-coaster,
it runs with speed; and it is unpredictable.
It partners with time, to hide what happens next.
Time appears in glowing pink; it looks promising.
It is a veil covering the eyes of many,
to not know they have but a short time left.

How time flies, as I looked back at the life of Naomi,
I watched as we grew older.
All those years behind us has come and gone so fast.
I wish I had the power to turn back the hands of time,
and cherish those lovely moments again;
I wish I could look into the eyes of Naomi,
and tell how I had love to be with her forever.
But if wishes were horses, even beggars would ride.

Naomi left me with nothing but a precious memory.
As the wind came from the four wings,
it wiped Naomi’s precious memory from the face of the earth.
I pleaded, but it said, her time had passed.
It dawned on me that only legacy lives.
Unfortunately, Naomi left no legacy.
