Let Me Mourn Poem by Judy Alegria

Let Me Mourn

Let me mourn
as you debate and fight,
defend the plight,
obscure the truth,
and push outta sight…
Let me mourn.

As you raise your voice
Stand up in arms
Defend your choice
And sound the alarms…
Let me mourn.

As you look upon the words
Written on the screen
Validating the truth
You've been trained to see....

As you read your fancy books
Pointing to who's right
Examining every debate
Dissecting every side…

I…

I will look upon the faces
Begging to be seen…
Crying and dying on my screen.

I will read my book
and search myself…
for truth.

The truth is that it is not men fighting this fight.
It is not one land over another
But one against his brother.
It's our children.
& their bodies lay piled
...defiled
One on top of another!
So let me mourn.

Let me mourn their faces,
their souls,
their stolen joy.
Let me cry for their smiles,
Now gone & destroyed.

Let me scream for the pain
They can no longer scream….
Let me wail & mourn
Their stolen dreams.

Mourn your dust, your rocks
as the wind carries it away.
Mourn your materials, your fabric
As they slowly decay.

And as you pray to He whom you fight for
Ask him, too, if this is His will.
If the bodies of His children
Which you've laid upon His alter
And whose blood you let spill….
Ask Him. Or will He mourn with me.

Look no further than your books,
Blinded fools, led astray.
Put away the genocide,
the centralized,
mechanized,
desensitized,
facade.
But if you cannot
Or you refuse
And you excuse
The blatant abuse
abroad....
Then at least see my heart, torn,
Leave it worn,
And let me mourn.
