Life Poem by Nick Downer

Life

abandoned tears fall silently
to the murmur of a
lonely train whistle
fading quietly, close
yet distant
life turns backwards
in an instant
like a clock
moving counterclockwise
life is full of
melancholic goodbyes
full of unshed tears,
tears yet to cry
and when we ask
what is our gain
what is the purpose
of all this pain
we will never extract and answer
life cannot be summed up
nice and neat
but ive dared to ask
asked why I'm here
but the more i wonder
it becomes more unclear
great people rise and fall
and im still here
through it all
i still live while
good people die
while good hearts go cold
mine just grows old
and the older i get
the more I fail
let people down
especially myself
place morals and values
on an undusted shelf
while i hurt you once
and still once more
cut you in pieces
swept clean off my floor
i cut myself with actions and words
words reserved for
people i hate
i hate you but
i hate myself more.
