Like A Mouse That Crawled In Stealthily

Kannada Composition by Purandara Dasa
English Translation by C.P. Ravikumar

Like a mouse that crawled in stealthily
Smelling the savory
Only to be trapped under the stone in a contraption
I let my mind stealthily crawl
Towards baser desires
And I am crushed.
O Teacher, Vithala of Purandara,
One who is worshipped by Brahma,
Get me out of this situation,
And pray keep me in the company
Of your Dasas.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This composition is a confession. Even a saint may have his weaknesses. The poet begs for strength from his Lord to stay away from the weaknesses. It is bad company that can trigger a suppressed desire - a person who has quit smoking may be tempted to smoke a cigarette in the company of smokers. 'Keep me in the company of other Dasas, so that I am never tempted, ' asks Puranadara Dasa.
