Love Thy Stranger Poem by Cory Fox

Love Thy Stranger

Umbrella gripped in shaking hands
These gray skies just aren't sure
But if I guard what's mine
So sheltered and secure
I know that I'll be fine

Until a stranger crossed my path
A cold and broken soul
Twenty days on earthen floor
About to take their toll
And then he'll wake no more

His quaking body pleads to me
Still, I can't afford to care
The unprepared get wet
It's always raining somewhere
And I won't risk a bet

With my first step, I caught his gaze
Empty eyes washed over me
A desperate, voiceless cry
Chilling rain fell steadily
But I could not walk by

Open umbrella now in hand
I leave it in his care
And act I won't forget
It's always raining somewhere
But I'll walk without regret
