For many years, she walked the streets
and her body she sold.
It was a living, she said,
but deep within her,
there was a heart of gold.
The story goes they called her
the Madonna of the streets.
If anyone needed help,
her outstretched hand was always there.
She rescued many young souls
from the streets of despair.
Her neighbours turned their nose up
at her living ways,
but took a long second look
the day the lord took her away.
A child was playing in the road,
the car they did not see,
but this woman of the night
saw what was happening there.
There was a screech of brakes,
a child screaming for his mum,
and a twisted broken body
underneath the wheels of the car.
When the crowds began to gather,
the tragedy became very clear.
The girl had been passing,
saw what was happening there,
had sacrificed her own life
for that child fair.
The neighbours,
who had shunned her,
now began to weep openly
for that loathsome girl
that lived down the street,
and whose friends had nicknamed her,
the Madonna of the streets.
Many learned a lesson
on that fateful day.
That was not to judge to harshly
those they do not really know.

You give lessons in moral values without religion assisting. Nice story.
I had to look at this poem that so moved you in the writing of it. It had the same effect on me, too, David. A message we all need to take heed of - never judge someone by what is happening on the outside. Superb writing, as usual. Meaningful..... Love, Fran xxx
We should never just look on the outside, it is the inside, the soul of a person that counts. A sad but very true story. Love and hugs Ernestine XXX
I'm still crying David, it's so sad and it's a situation that I can see could happen. We never know why people do what they do, we don't live in their hearts and no not what happened to them in their past. It is not up to us to judge only the creator can do that and the sooner some of us realize that the better. This lady of the night definitely had a heart of Gold and no one gave her the chance to show it instead they judged her. Excellent poem David. --Melvina--
the cover of her book was tattered and torn.....but inside the pages lay a beautiful heart that was mourned.....wonderful message here David...thanks for sharing it
