Mango Tree
We had a giant mango tree
It was lovely, old and green
Stood like a huge mountain
From far away its branches could be seen.
Its mangoes were green, yellow and red
Very delicious to taste, when they were ripe
Everyone who tasted it-praised it
And termed it as rare type.
The giant mango tree provided shade
Against the blazing sunlight of noon
My grandmother used to sit here
In the shade enjoying nature’s boon.
The served like a cooling covert
During the hot months of summer season
We sat beneath her leafy boughs
And threw stones for no reason.
Her mangoes were mellow and sweet
Children wandered around her day and night
In the hope of picking a mellow fruit
Without considering wrong and right.
The tree became too old to bear
The weight of its heavy arms
All were worried and panicky stricken
That someday it would fall causing harms.
All family gathered in a meeting
To decide the fate of this giant tree
Decision was taken to cut the tree
To make every body tension free.
On a certain day, tree was cut down
By an expert wood cutter of the locality
From that day family suffered a great loss
As a consequence of rigorous penalty.
Our happy abode has become very hot
Specially, in the summer season
It is an out burst of heavenly anger
For cutting tree without valid reason.
When I go in front of my house
I become very sad and lonely
From childhood onwards it inspired me
It was my friend in need only.
She taught me an important lesson of life
How to sacrifice for the cause of others
Life becomes great and successful
By bestowing every thing what one gathers.
Shakil Ahmed.
Shakil, i am really happy to see a beautiful poem on a Mango tree and the anguish suffered on cutting the tree To me a t'ree is a messiah'! 'Never cut a tree' is a title of one of my tree poems too! Apart from shade, a tree is a symbol of great teachings and values.......10
