Marriage Poem by Sumali Nagarajan

Marriage

Rating: 5.0

Is something wrong
With marriage as an institution?
It's a centuries old tradition
But will it survive or not
Has now become a question!

When our previous generations
Preferred to tie the knot
And share the hearth together
Whether they got along or not,
The forth-coming generations
Won't have the patience
To submit n adjust
‘Till death do us part'!

Why marriage is on the decline
And people prefer to just live-in
Have the values undergone a change
Or are they ‘smart' to begin?

IMHO, problem is not
In the institution itself, implanted
It is when couples start
Taking each other for granted!

A responsible society always needs a slow and steady institution to win the race. Thanks for raising the point so poetically.

Great poem, Sumali! Very true and honest thoughts, though they might not be popular. Well-written too.

This is indeed a very thought provoking poem. The matter has been held in the right perspective. I personally feel that the institution of marriage is still as strong in India and elsewhere as it has ever been.
