Midnight Visitor Poem by Anastasia Wofford

Midnight Visitor

Awakened one night by a terrible sound,
I got up to see, but nothing I found.
I closed my eyes for a moment still,
Only to see a figure at my windowsill.
I opened them again, and nothing I saw,
“I’m still asleep! ” is what I thought.
I kissed my son, one time more,
Then I heard a tap-tap-tappin at my door.
Who could it be, in the middle of the night?
I grabbed up my bat, ready for a fight.
No one was there, to my surprise,
I exhaled my breath and closed my eyes.
Now back in bed, I snuggle up tight,
To drift off to sleep for the rest of the night.
Awakened again, by that terrible noise
It must be my neighbors, and their mischievous ploys.
“I’ve got a gun! ” I yelled out loud,
Then there was nothing, not a sound.
In bed once more, drifting to sleep,
Not knowing someone was there, for me to meet.
My Aunt Virginia, is who it was,
She said “I’m the Guardian Angel for your son!
I watch over him, and keep him safe,
For he is the one God sent to take my place.
The place in you heart, that when I left was empty,
God gave him to your, so you could remember me.”
I then woke up, searching for her,
It was all a dream, but not a blur.
I will tell this story to my son, when he’s a man,
For then he will be old enough to understand.
Why his mother sometimes cries in the middle of the night,
For her Aunt Virginia, who had such a short life.
