Millennial State Of Emptiness Poem by Leah Ayliffe

Millennial State Of Emptiness

White snow, like white roses
delicate in its beauty.
Isolated behind a glass window
looking out
feeling exposed.
Why do they want to watch?

Dreams exploded
floating like glitter to the floor.
I keep quiet
thinking it would save me.

Sailing thoughts that journey to Spanish lands,
summer happiness, hot sunshine,
waking to red and gold dawns.
White roses too.

If I told you how many men have told me I'm different from the rest,
you'd understand why I feel alone today.
Why I stay inside and hide.

Things that once shined bright
like disco balls in heaven
are dying in their subtle and pretty lies.
The sparkle is there,
I cannot say if it's real.

Silver skies, black coffee
'I like the way you work it, bomb diggity'
Daydreaming time away
in useless chatter
and thought.
A 50's housewife, the syndrome of boredom,
without the man or children
without the cleaning or responsibility.
Maybe a 20's upper class doll
drowning in the luxury of doing nothing.
Modern day emptiness,
how peculiar it follows through time.

Sometimes there are things to distract the sad mind.
There is always the potential of happiness,
of someone taking you far away.
It comes now and then,
but doesn't tend to stay.
They never do.
Yet, the rare occurrence someone understands you is beautiful to know, even if only temporarily.
'Nothing gold can stay'

White snow, white roses,
all the colourful flowers on my Hawaiian lai.
I sing blues about the ever changing state of our identities
and how some of us try to root ourselves in art.

Safe and scared behind glass windows.

Television and silence.
