My First Love Poem by DR KUSUMITA MUKHERJEE

My First Love

Winds burst through
I cannot feel the rhythm of my heart.
Are you deserting me?
You cannot- -
Please do not.

I need you
This is not the time to leave
Everything was prepared
Items bought, ceremony planned
Guests?
There will be plenty.

Oh! Why did you have to come?
Stop me from what I was doing.
You ask the impossible of me.
I cannot desert my first love.

I had nurtured it in my bosom since the day I lost my mother
I got betrothed on the day my father remarried and left.

Do not dissuade me, dear…friend- -
I want to be in the arms of my eternal beloved
I want to rejoice in placidity
Why do you disentangle my bonds?

Do not disrupt my perfect universe
I want to be encircled in the warmest embrace of my childhood love.
Adieu.

Come let us be one
You and I- -
Between us can come none
Pain be my groom for all eternity
Let us fulfill the ceremony of death.
