My Love Poem by Jeff Goetz

My Love

I could stare at her for hours
That woman whose stolen my heart.
As she lies next to me, her back turned away
I trace her outline and shift closer
To smell her hair and count the freckles dotting the nape of her neck.
I breathe in: she’s beautiful.
It must have been the mussels, she made the call.
Reaching out, souls searching souls.
We connected that first night and I knew then it was beyond my control.
She’s strong and assured. Confident and mature.
Her words command attention but I’d give it to her anyway.
It’s her strength that’s my weakness. She’d just say that I like it that way.
She’s right.
When I saw her, I felt unworthy. When I spent time with her, I was honored.
When I think about her, I smile. And I miss her.
It’s the intermittency that kills me.
Take me back to that magical night when a first encounter
Turned into that one true love.
She’s captured my heart and my soul.
And I’m grateful.
Though I want to tell her my intentions, I fear we’re on different roads.
I want her to say, “I love you, ” and I’ll wait patiently for that day.
It’s easy to give into her without a fight.
She’d just say I like it that way.
And she’d be right.
