My Poetry Thing Poem by Jessi Odom

My Poetry Thing

Rating: 5.0

I told my mom I need a 'thing', you know like what other people have.
A thing with singing and a thing with drawing to make a name and a path.
She told me my 'thing' I had was writing poetry.
'But everyone does that, it's no thing', I tried to get her to see.
'Half the kids in my school can rhyme that's all it really is',
Then she went all serious and looked at me and said:
'Poetry is not just rhyming it's more complex you know,
It's a way of talking to the world and letting your thoughts go.
It's another way to communicate, which makes it really unique,
you don't even need to say a word to make your thoughts complete.
And it doesn't even have to rhyme, really there's no rules,
you just right the feelings you have inside which makes it really cool.
And even though there are no rules still doesn't make it easy,
because you want to make it balanced so it's not to much this or that,
or overly cheesey!
The beauty of a poem is that you can mourn, scream, or rejoice.
All you need is something to write with you don't even need a voice.
So what do you say now are you proud that that's your thing? '
I looked at her and gave a smile: 'Yeah but I wish that I could sing.'
