My Uncle Poem by Sydney Kerr

My Uncle

Rating: 5.0

***So I am trying a little different style here, and we'll see if I like it***

Uncle Kevin wasn't really an uncle
no relation, no blood
still showed up for all the christmas' though

He lived with my aunt and uncle
she would introduce him as her brother to strangers
reality would call him a family-friend
I'd call him my uncle

The guy had money though
could take them on vacations
and buy them things they could never have
gave their daughter a chance to succeed
something they wanted but couldn't do alone

On a day that brought clouds and rain
maybe a little bit of realization too
she told him to put the dogs in the shed
I guess she didn't realize she had a made a choice
He trotted out in the rain and put the dogs in shed
perhaps a little too brashly for her liking
that set her off

'grab anything you have in this place and leave'
was the last thing she ever said to him
maybe he was happy to be gone
free from the burden of trying to buy the family he didn't have
he didn't have to buy it though, not for me
to me he was family
he was my uncle
