My Vow To You, My Darling Poem by Onareen Ferdinand

My Vow To You, My Darling

She's fiddling with the lace curtains while staring out at the lake. Sunset's in an hour and already grey clouds are racing to catch up. She smiles at the sun's rays dancing on the lake below; teasing the sky.
‘No darkness can ever overpower true beauty, ' she whispers.
And just like that her mind wanders to her wedding night - 4 nights away. She blushes as wave after wave, of a young bride's excitement crash against her; weakening her knees. Notes of jasmine from her perfume blend effortlessly with the musky smell of the hotel room.
‘Just like us, ' she muses.
Settling down with a pen and paper, she reflects over her wedding ceremony. Born and raised Catholic, she's known from childhood the scripted wedding vows: powerful, endearing but constricting. She has always been expressive and maybe at times, superfluous with words, but she wants Him to know that she loves him much more than just a few ‘I do's'.
Lips pursed in concentration, she starts to write out her true vow - the one she has longed to utter when lying weak in his arms.
She promises herself that she will give it to him, the night before they wed...

Cup my face in your hands
Let my cheeks find repose in your palms;
And as you place your lips on my forehead
Let the silence thunder.

Allow my hands to steady you; in
The tempest, let them be your strength.
In your solace, let them caress you
And revive your tired limbs.

Never stop my feet from walking ahead.
Never question, never doubt
My desire to walk beside you
In the darkness.

Live always in the knowledge that
Every cell of mine, breathes
Honesty. Every pore on my skin,
Oozes love.

Keep my eyes locked in your gaze
They speak a language known only to angels;
They hold the answers you seek
When mortal lips fail to speak.

Guard my heart from arrows of hate.
This weak heart of flesh
Promises a love and loyalty
Forged in the Heavens.

Adore my soul; it adores you
It's flames of passion engulf its being.
Honour my soul; it honours you
The Heavens above stand witness to this truth.

Everyday I live, I pledge
To love you with a fierceness
And innocence you've never known.
With all my being I vow

To be parted only at the final goodbye
Let the tears that stream down my face
Reveal the depth of my love:
A love in which you will always reside.
