Nightmare Survivor Poem by Dakota Ellerton

Nightmare Survivor

During a time so vulnerable,
all I can do is look at your silhouette.
Draping my limbs over you,
my head rested on your chest.
If love were really like this,
I’d of told you by now we’ve found something special.
Time has never seemed so non-exhistant.
My head starts to spin,
as my body shakes.
Insecurity is disecting my mind,
until reality flows through my veins.
You’ve covered up so many lies,
and regardless how many times I’ve pulled the sheets off,
uncovering so much truth,
I’ve loved you just the same.
I couldn’t feel more helpless,
in a life I can no longer control.
When you look me in the eyes,
and ask why I’m crying,
do you ever read the answer written on my face?
I’ve held strong for the longest time,
only to collapse behind closed doors.
I know if any other were to know this silence,
it’d be you.
Through these times in your life,
you’ve shown a strong shoulder.
But when the crowd has vanished,
and you’re left to determine your own reality,
you fall to endless pieces.
Father always taught me,
anything could be saved with black electrical tape,
so can I not hold you together?
It’s inevitable to lose people we love,
but that’s no reason not to love at all.
If I so softly kissed your cheek,
pushing your hair to the side,
to tell you, I need you.
Would you caress me just the same?
Subconciously drag your hands up my back out of habit,
flesh to flesh.
Every hidden imperfection and flaw in sight,
I’d of laid such truths on you, if I were cruel.
Watched your face react to my words.
In such a state I could whisper to you,
putting thoughts in your mind as you slept.
But I’d never make you suffer,
such a devilish way to think.
I could show you things,
you’d never have imagined,
not without my insight.
But still I never could.
I’d kiss your forehead and pull the covers over you.
My arms wrapped around,
sometimes you just need to be held.
If our love were any less real,
I’d of left your life during such a long lasting lie.
