Chanel Number 5 once contained ambergris
from the death of sperm whales, castor or castoreum
from the genital sacs of Canadian beavers,
civet from Abyssinian civet
cats who were rotated in a drum to cause
them in terror to secret civet, and musk from
musk oxen,38 of whom were castrated to
yield 1 ounce of musk.
