O Viridissima Virga Poem by Michael Walker

O Viridissima Virga

O most verdant virgin, hail!
Upon the winds of angels' wings
Above the earthly things you sail,
And spring, once silent, sings!

When the time had come,
Beneath the heat of the sun,
You flourished with the fragrance of balsam,

For from your bosom flowered
The Beauty of the Hour,
Aroma now empowered.

The rain christens the grain,
And all the earth gives birth;
For frumentation of our pain,
Your heart became our hearth.

Upon the feast of flesh we gaze
To shower on the greatest praise
With the song of mirth we raise.

Eve held you in contempt,
For from her curse, you are exempt!
