Ode To 80's Music And How I Adore It Poem by Carli Smith

Ode To 80's Music And How I Adore It

My English teacher wanted an ode, so I gave her one...

My expression is troubled as I sit in my chair
“An ode? ” I scream as I pull at my hair

“My muses have left me! My brains turned to mush!
My fingers are broken! The keys just won’t push! ”

A million excuses my mind does enact
As I jig in my chair, spellbound by Fleetwood Mac

Writer’s block binds me; I shiver in my shoes
I bob my head silently to the B-52’s

“Crack is Whack” I despairingly type
Ms. Houston I hear, Bobby no where in sight

The Purple Haze surrounds me; my inspiration is blocked
Like a Virgin I tremble; I Wanna Rock!

Bret Michaels comes to mind as I take a deep breathe
Every Rose Has Its Thorn - HA! - Not Lacey’s death

Mrs. Lynn, how could you? What did I do?
But like REO Speedwagon, I’ll Keep on Loving You

Half done is my poem, my times almost up
My Daddy says, “Hey”; My reply: “Word Up”

“Nasty! ” I hear; someone’s listening to Janet
Blasphemy from my lips; I tell them to can it

“Take My Breathe Away” I groan at this sin
A suicidal writer? Omg, call CNN!

This Total Eclipse of the Heart of my mind!
My racing thoughts leave Prince’s Little Red Corvette behind

I can feel it coming In the Air Tonight
I’ve almost finished with little left to write

A whole page I’ve filled with my useless wit
But who have I forgotten? Guns ‘n’ Roses! Oh! @#$

On that note, what can I leave you? What parting wisedom?
Don’t be like Axle and tell Tommy Hilfigure to “Come get some! ”
