Ode To My Father

I stood upon the valley hill,
And looked into the shadow deep,
I heard the cry of a dying man,
And it is to my heart that he speaks.

Waste not the time you are given,
For steady it will seep
Into the moors and buried grounds
Of loved ones we wish to keep.

Praise not your fathers when they are gone
For you to finally say
How much you loved and honored them
while standing at their graves.

Soon you too shall be alone
Wishing for another day
To walk along and sing your song,
And tell them what you could not say.

These moments are few and preciously rare,
For a son to know his sire.
To speak to him as a fellow man,
And see in each other the same fire.

Tell him with pride and courage in your heart
'It's from you that I'm today able to climb higher.
You have done well in the children you raised
Into adults filled with desire.'

For when they stand atop the valley hill
And look to its furthest reach.
It will be your words that echo in their hearts
For all eternity to keep.

This poem is sad and full of emotion. I especially like the second verse. Thanks Athena :)
