On Patriotism Poem by Marian Evans

On Patriotism

I'm sure our hearts will chance to bleed true.
I hope yours does better than mine for you.

From the time we first sit and look out
To our keeping the caged bird that sings without a shout,
Our nation has moved under the authority of God,
But great responsibilities have fallen on the sod
That was torn from the earth and tossed from the start.
We've stolen enough fallen blood that we needn't take heart.
