One Cannot Bring Back The Past Poem by Francis Duggan

One Cannot Bring Back The Past

One cannot bring back the past and what is gone is gone
And today leads to tomorrow and life will go on
And though young Johnny pines for a love that once used to be
For a lovelorn one there's not much sympathy.

In years from now and much wiser from time
He will look back in his love forsaken prime
And think of the love aches that led to private tears
And the wasted love pinings of his younger years.

One cannot bring back the past or change the what has been
Though we ought to learn from what we have done and seen
And young people pine for lost love every day
For life experience the price some have to pay.

One cannot bring back the past or change what happened years ago
And in hindsight we realize then we did not know
That one door opens when another close
But one cannot put an old head on younger shoulders I suppose.
