Opposite Of 'gay'

Back before our 'gay',
the heavily-laden
who could not run gaily about
picking up rocks
and being distracted by barks and flowers,
did they hit on
that who could could be called 'gay'?

Did they rack their minds
for a word for themselves,
and hit on 'bent';
for their bent over backs?

Or hit on 'racks'?

Was it a considerate gay hit
that 'straight' fit?
