Orchards Of Granite Poem by Thabo Seseane

Orchards Of Granite

Through the interdependence of contrasts
- as in wakefulness and dreaming,
- symmetry and discordance,
- music and noise;
Through pleasing and displeasing,
Empathy and callus and
Also, if not by dominating nature,
Then, at least by shouting loud defiance
At the elements -

Whilst always bound
By a chain
Whose links are artistry
For its own sake -

In contact yet always seeking,
In touch, yet not quite:
This is the habitat.
A fecund orchard arrayed
In endless granite gardens, and
Standing at its watery gate, the silent sentinel,
Right hand raised in a fiery salute:
At the orchard's gate stands Lady Liberty.
