The Southern Lighthouse Poem by Thabo Seseane

The Southern Lighthouse

Occasionally,
Unexpectedly, arriving again at a viewer's vantage,
A panorama of views in north-south directions:
Pantomimes repeated in many theatres -

Show this lighthouse which beckons
Humanity in tempest.
This refuge for the homeless and landless
Only gives false bearings to those adrift:
Like sirens that entice
To their wreck: they founder
On the very rocks of their salvation.

The keepers of the lighthouse and their helpers-
Thieves from dreamers,
The young and the old,
Workers and work-seekers
The hungry and well-fed,
The sick and the fit,
Prisoners and the free,
The housed and homeless.

All are betrayed -
At the southern lighthouse.

Thanks for reading my poem, Thabo. Just reread this one and it really is good - They founder on the vey rocks of their salvation - so clever. Some of my poems are aboiut Africa, though the titles are not always obvious. Like Sounds of the night. You might enjoy Beauty and the Beast.

Hello Thabo! This is a very fitting symbol. Well written. I am a fellow South African, but living abroad. You might like my Rock of Ages poem which involves a lighthouse too, although the themes are different. Sala gahle!

Hi Laurie, thanks for your valuable insight & encouraging comments about the poem The Southern Lighthouse. I've just read your powerful Rock of Ages and am especially moved by the final question it poses, which leaves an open door for mankind with the implication that we have the choice to act humanely, or not. Sala gahle!
