Palmyra Poem by Barry Middleton

Palmyra

Rating: 5.0

laid waste by terror and war
an ancient city
built on Neolithic memory
astride the Silk Road
lies in utter destruction

these ancient ruins
were not human beings
yet their desecration
is almost as great an evil as death
they cannot be renewed

the Great Colonnade
the Temple of Bel
lie in rubble
only the archway stands
and so there must be grieving

The senseless destruction of such valuable heritage is indeed a reason for grieving. It's truly saddening. The structures that survived centuries were destroyed in minutes by self-righteous lunatics. A very significant write.10

This is a sad world that has such cruelty and insanity in it.

The saddest thing to me is that where these tyrants are all dead, new ones will rise.
