Paradox Poem by Mamta Agarwal

Paradox

One day,
We are all
Going to die.

But we
Choose to deny
It in everyway.

What if you
You are diagnosed
With a deadly illness,
And told
Your days are numbered.
Or if you live,
To bed you will
Be confined.

After you are flooded,
With overwhelming emotions:
Shock, denial, anger
Grief and fear,
You make peace.

Then in a tranquil mind
You decide,
You will make your exit dignified.
And not go whimpering and crying.

When you learn how to die,
You learn how to live,
And enrich your life.

Finally you have the epiphany,
What is ephemeral.

It is a paradox
In dying
You learn
The art of being.

As told by a friend who battled with kidney failure and went for dialysis everyday. He lived for 20 years, a fruitful life always wearing a smile. I never heard him complain, this poem is in memory of him. He taught me valuable lessons

the paradox itself is very philosophical...learning and age no doubt are directly proportional but then life comes to an end and not the learning..., the insight into many things is learned gradually....but the mortal body does not support much...the dilemma cannot be resolved so without caring much, , we have to go on.. nice composition... Coming into life one has to die sooner or later. That has been already written on a platter. Every one is always aware of this. This awareness is the reason for most of our fears. But only a wise and courageous person can woo death with such ease and noble style… A very good presentation, mamta… You have already read my poem ‘my last lover’ depicting death inevitable…
