Playing Along Poem by Nosratara Ahmed

Playing Along

Winter in the days before,
Fallen white, each flake galore,
Sledding by, 'do come! ' they cheered,
But I did not, I watched and sneered,

The snow, a dome of frosty doom,
I was trapped, within my murky room.
The kids, they asked, 'come out, to play? '
'Must you be a bore today? '

Gasping, I am never such!
Oh, I am fun,
Yes, very much.

Stomping down the creaking stairs,
I slipped into my mitten pairs,
Out the door, I ran ahead,
Charging at the snowy bed,

A fort I made,
A zone of war,
And each child came,
Again for more.

Oh no, they shot their balls of white,
It landed as an icy light,
Atop my knitted cap it laid,
A snowy cake,
And Happy made.

'Attack! ' their elfish voice-a roar,
And down it came,
A snowy pour,

Buried toe to neck, I wondered,
Was I stuck?
'Oh, yes! ' They thundered,

Rising as a winter tide,
The snow befell, my
Covered stride,

'Here she comes' they called away,
'You're playing like a kid today'

I smiled, I laughed, I played along,
I guess I was,
The children's song.
