Poverty Poem by Samuel Adesunloro

Poverty

There they were, all lit in front of me, houses
While I'm here, standing all alone in muddy grasses
I looked up to the sky and saw nothing but darkness,
A reflection of those in the houses, heartless
I looked down, lost in thoughts, thinking and thinking of what could've been
Looked up and first time in ages, I saw a broad grin
My heart lit up, my loneliness felt like a bad experience
And this broad grin made all the difference
Then…I woke up and realized it was all a dream
Oh like heaven it was, like happiness it seemed
Oh how wicked can humans be?
Then, in the distance I saw a house, just like the others
Except in front of it, it said, "Love one another, like a brother"
I arose from the vast field, with my smelly feet
I went over and as I knocked, I could see they were having a feast
A smiling man answered and told me to come in and have a bath
I was jaw-dropped and everything faded, including my wrath
Laugh/smile at someone today
You don't know, you might be the one that makes their day
