Prodigal Children Poem by Sarah Martens

Prodigal Children

prodigal children of the world
sucking up resources
consuming them all
don’t you have a clue what’s coming
you better ready yourself for the fall

this isn’t gonna last forever
this beautiful nurturing world
you’ve sucked it all up and spit it all out
and the earth is in a fetal position now
trying to shield itself from it all

It seems cloning made-up ideals is the new “in style”
bodies are toys to be altered and tainted
it seems loving yourself has been out for awhile

One day all they’ll have left
will be puddles of waste…
and they’ll cry for deliverance,
and they’ll scream
where are the trees?
and they’ll blame
everyone else,
for lack of their shame.

prodigal children of the world
sucking up resources
consuming them all
don’t you have a clue what’s coming
you better ready yourself for the fall
