Quicksand Living Poem by Cherie Mort

Quicksand Living

Fatigue weighs me down like a leaden load in quicksand
The more I struggle to hold up the weight crushing my shoulders, the faster I sink down into oblivion
Birds screech around me in nearby trees
Their razor voices startling me every time I close my eyes
I imagine how I might shake this burden off, and how nice it would be to get a good night's rest

Another day ends, and I still carry my heavy burden on my back, feeling older and grayer as the time goes on
The sand has gone from ankle-deep to waist-high and finally up to my neck
I take one last breath as I go under
And release my worldly woes from my tired body
