Áras An Uachtaráin & The Council Of State Meeting Poem by Chris Lane

Áras An Uachtaráin & The Council Of State Meeting

Rating: 2.5

The first decade of the new century was coming to an end
On this day of winter solstice
Icicles glistened like fangs

The Taoiseach and The Tánaiste
Along with senior Judges
Made their way to the meeting, as did
The Ceann Comhairle

The trusted attorney general
Accompanied The Cathaoirleach
All considered advisors to the residing President

The Credit Institutions (Stabilisation) Bill
Awaiting the presidents signature
Having been approved by both The Dáil and Seanad
Now quickly passed into law by the signature of the President.

So strange it seems to me that the citizens of the Republic
Had previously called for a general election
Having lost confidence in their government
Stranger still it would seem - The citizens request had been forfeited.

A bitter freeze in our midst
As the first decade of the new century came to an end
On the day of winter solstice
Icicles glistened like fangs
