Reading To Me Poem by Greg Beattie

Reading To Me

All is quiet in this room
Except your steady voice
And my light breath.

The scent of lilacs and disinfectant
Chemical masked by chemical
Descends on my bed, its weight
Reminding me I am going nowhere.

And yet I am away
In the land you evoke
In the book you hold.

Your eyes belie fatigue
The end of an endless day
Yet you stay, for a reason
I can only name love.
