Reality Poem by Raymond Farrell

Reality

Rating: 4.5

Reality
Is what
Most people
Can only take
In small does
And then
They must
Take a break
Watch a movie
Attend a play
Go to the opera
Drink a case of beer
Snort a few lines
Of cocaine
Write poetry like
Eliot, Stevens, Ashbery
Read poetry by
Eliot, Stevens, Ashbery
Impress themselves
And try to impress others
With high sounding tones
Feigned eloquence
Meanwhile reality
Sits on its haunches
Waiting
It is ever present
In all its forms
What change it undergoes
Is only superficial
The themes
Remain the same
The essence
Is always the same
The poor were here
Thousands of years ago
They are here today
And will be tomorrow
We may call them
By different names
But until
We are prepared
To face up
To reality
Nothing
Is going to change.

An apt description of the escape mechanisms people use to escape from.... As I struggle with the definition and concept of reality, I don't know what it is, if anything at all, that I am escaping from when I engage in some of those activities
