Roller Coaster Poem by Richard Shores

Roller Coaster

She was the first face I saw, when I came into this world,
she smiled so brightly, my little toes curled.
She wrapped me tightly, in the blanket she had,
Took me home, to meet my dad.
Hey little buddy, he said with a smile,
Come sit with dad, for just a little while.
Soon I was five, to school I would go,
Building with blocks, I continued to grow.
By the time I was ten, I had started to play,
Football and baseball, I'd play every day.
When high school arrived, who would have known?
I was a football star, how big I had grown.
Until that day, when my knee didn’t bend,
Pop was the sound, and that was the end.
I’ve laughed, I fought, I’ve even cried,
It’s been a long Roller Coaster, but a hell of a ride.
To the top of the mountains, through valleys below,
Around and around this old coaster goes,
Through the good times, through the bad,
Sometimes laughing, sometimes sad.
When it will stop, nobody knows,
Hang on tightly, wherever it goes.
Mother’s ride is over, she crossed the great divide,
She lives within our memories, as we continue on this ride.
Daddy’s going strong, living life like a race,
Always filled with joy, and a smile on his face.
I’ll ride this mighty coaster, through every dip and turn,
Where the journey ends, no longer my concern.
Family is my rock, I no longer harbor fears,
We anchor down together, and wipe each others tears.
