S O S Poem by Robert Eckstein

S O S

As soon as it was dark he'd go outside
And wink his little flashlight at the stars.
S O S, S O S. It was the only code he knew,
But someone out there would surely understand.
'I'm stranded, I'm marooned here. I really don't belong.
'I don't know how it happened, but please, please take me back'.

He hoped that he'd soon learn his way around,
And what to do and what he shouldn't do.
(And by the way, he was good with languages.)
He knew how slow a light beam really is.
It even takes six minutes from the Sun,
And the distance to the stars is centuries.
'But if you're close enough to see me, here I am.
'I'm only eight years old and won't get in the way'.
