Salmon Leap Poem by Tom Billsborough

Salmon Leap

Rating: 5.0

Perpetual waterfall,
A green pool,
Where willows bow their shadows.
Its solace I swallow
And allow it to patrol
The tenuous suburbs of my soul.
Not long before the reckless salmon
Leap and fall, leap and fall.
Until they reach the higher level,
Nearer to the spawning grounds.
I think myself so small composing sounds,
As witness by comparison,
With only brief orisons
To their real endeavour.

This poem is beautiful just in the words themselves. The images are so evocative for me. You start with a lonely, but beautiful setting by a waterfall and then compare that to the lonely recesses of the speaker's mind. I love the line, 'tenuous suburbs of my soul.' For me, this metaphor imparts deep meaning and it just seems fresh and original. Finally, you bring in so much when the speaker compares his life's journey to that of the salmon. The final three lines makes one stop and think..... what is the speaker really trying to say? What does this life really mean? What is it all for? Is there something deeper? I had to look up the word 'orisons.' I hadn't used this term as a part of my regular vocabulary...prayer..but I like the sound of the word and the fact that it is very close to the word, horizons. Very imaginative bit of writing and I enjoyed reading it. This is very well done.

Thank you, Pamela. It means a great deal to me to receive these comments from a person of great understanding and one of my three favourite writers on this site. Sometimes you wonder where images come from. The whole picture came at once this afternoon and I had to rush in for pen and paper. Well, not exactly rush! By the way, the key safely nestling in the door! Must look at Amazon as you suggested! Tom
