Salute To Abeokuta South Poem by Olalekan Ololade Sobande

Salute To Abeokuta South

Abeokuta South
A colossus, amongst
That stands
And raises his head high
5. I salute thy uniqueness.
-
Created long and blessed
The great Alake’s palace
A symbolic monarch
Often sat at the Centre of my mind.
-
10. The historical centenary hall
Speaking of his great functions
Of theatre and events.
A great meeting Centre of Olds
For all Egba and Chiefs.
-
15. Sapon! Sapon! !
Sapon I salute thee
The heart of Abeokuta
The business Centre
That do not discriminate tribe.
-
20. Itoku market,
The best market when it comes
To any assorts of Adire
Our traditional fabric attire.
-
Abeokuta South
25. Asero is connected to thee
Ijaye the great pottery achieves
Is under thy jurisdiction.
-
I cannot but remember
The great “Oke-ilewo”
30. The great “Omida market”
“Kuto market”
Both popularly know
As OjaAlakowe
-
Governor IbikunleAmosun and his crew
35. May the Lord be your guide and guard
To see Abeokuta South
Greater than you met it.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is one of Mr. Cole earliest poems and it was taken from his first collection of poems, Mr. Cole was happened to be Olalekan’s art teacher back then in Junior Secondary School, one of Mr. Cole’s later works is Igbore High School Anthem. But Olalekan introduces, however tangentially, the theme of the black people which is important in Lekan.Lekan’s love for his local government and the matriarchal system of his Egba tribe must have greatly influenced his revolutionary praise of black beauty in poetry.
Abeokuta South is a local government in Ogun State where the poet was born, bred and had all his primary, secondary education all in Abeokuta South.
