Second Poem by Alexandra Estes

Second

A carefree child for a few days,
Then you begin to learn life's ways;
How you must compete to win.
That was when my pain did begin.

Innocence of childhood so far away;
A race to run day after day.
Do not stop or you will see
How far behind you will be.

I quickly learned my place;
Every runner has one in a race.
Some in front, some behind.
I am neither if this type of kind.

I am the one who pulls ahead,
Only to be overtaken when my legs feel like lead.
First is always in my sight,
But second place steals your will to fight.
