Second Place Poem by Paul Cornell

Second Place

Rating: 4.5

Second place

Your immense brown eyes, waves of hair and beautiful soft face,
No one else stands a chance of taking anything but second place

The kindest soul deep inside you makes the world's people look a disgrace,
And in this life, I know that you will finish above second place

You deserve to be loved so strong if your heart I can unlace,
And I never place my bets on the one in second place

I know I will never feel the way I feel for you and you can't believe that's the case,
But the closest anyone else will get to you is to finish second place

It hurts so bad when you tell me I might just lose this race,
And the fear is that I am the one who finishes in second place

Proudly admiring you like a goddess among the stars in space,
You just won't believe me that you'll never be in second place

It feels I've found true happiness laying in the warmth of your embrace,
And I don't ever wanna feel that warmth as I stand in second place

Loving anyone else now would make my aching heart regret the waste,
And you should know I'll always love you and hold your spot above that second place.
