We wonder at sequence inexorable
And offer salutations to the ethereal
In happy surrender to the inevitable
Raging against the inevitable: is it advisable?
Would we accept the constitution of silence eternal?
We are the evidence of life's longing for itself primordial
Let us extol ourselves as waves in the ocean wonderful
Or as birds in the sky, though the sky entire eludes us tactful
Let us indulge in occasional vanities and lyrical notes fanciful
And at last merge serenely with the ocean or the skies awful
