She Sold Herself For A Penny Poem by Lauren Joy

She Sold Herself For A Penny

She sold herself for a penny
To an old man by the bay
Who asked her in
For a tot of gin
And begged for her to stay

'Please stay, my love, ' he whispered low
'Please keep me company.'
His eyes were wet
So sad and yet
He still managed a smile

'For many years I have roamed the world
'Looking for the sun
'I searched for truth
'I searched for proof
'But came hom empty-handed'

'Please stay, my love, ' he said again
'Please keep me company
'I'll take your penny
'There will be plenty
'And you'll live happily'

She told herself she was ready
For something to finally change
So many years
Drowned with tears
And all help out of range

So she sold herself for a penny
To that old man by the bay
Who asked her in
For a tot of gin
And begged for her to stay
